Griphook: Alive Harry: That’s good Griphook: You buried the elf Harry: yes Griphook: And brought me here you are a very unusual wizard. How did you come by this sword? Harry: It’s complicated. Why did Bellatrix Lestrange think it should be in her vault at Gringotts? Griphook: It’s complicated Harry: The sword presented itself to us in a moment of need we didn’t steal it Griphook: There is a sword in Madam Lestrange’s Vault but I don’t think it is this one it is a fake. It was placed there this summer. Harry: And she never suspected it was a fake Griphook: A replica is very convincing only a goblin would recognise it this is the true sword of Gryffindor Hermione: Who’s the acquaintance? Griphook: A Hogwarts professor as I understand it he is now headmaster Ron: Snape. He put a fake sword in Bellatrix’s vault. Why? Griphook: There are more few curious things in the vaults at Gringotts Harry: And in madam Lestrange’s vault as well Griphook: Perhaps Harry: I need to get into Gringotts into one of the vaults Griphook: It is impossible Harry: Alone yes but with you no Griphook: Why should I help you? Harry: I have gold lots of it Griphook: I have no interest in gold Harry: Then what Griphook: That (Points to sword of Gryffindor) that is my price (They Step Out of Griphook’s room) Hermione: Are you thinking that there’s a horcrux in Bellatrix’s vault Harry: Well she was terrified when she thought we’d been in there she kept asking what else we’d taken I bet you anything that there’s another horcrux in there another piece of his soul let’s find it and kill it and then where one step closer to killing him Ron: And what happens when we find it how are we supposed to destroy it naked with the sword and Griphook. Harry: I’m still working on that part Fleur: His weak Harry: Mr Ollivander I need to ask you a few questions Mr Ollivander: Anything my boy anything Harry: Would you mind identifying this wand we need to know if it’s safe to use (Harry gives Mr Ollivander a wand) Mr Ollivander: Walnut dragon heartstring 12 and 3 quarter inches unel unelding this belonged to bellatrix Lestrange treat it carefully. (Harry takes Bellatrix’s wand and gives Mr Ollivander another wand) Mr Ollivander: Horthorn unicorn hair 10 inches reasonably pliant this was the wand of Draco Malfoy Harry: Was. Is it not still Mr Ollivander: Well perhaps not if you won it from him I sense it allegiance has changed Harry: You talk about wands as if they have feelings can think Mr Ollivander: The wand chooses the wizard Mr. Potter that much has always been clear to us who have studied wandlore Harry: And what do you know about the deathly hallows Mr Ollivander: It is rumoured there are three the elder wand the cloak of invisibility to hide you from your enemies and the resurrection stone to bring back loved ones from the dead together they make one the master of death but few truly believe that such objects exist Harry: Do you do you believe they exist sir Mr Ollivander: Well I see no reason to put stark into an old wives tale Harry: You’re lying. you know one exists you told him about it you told him about the elder wand and where he could go looking for it Mr Ollivander: He tortured me besides only conveyed rumours there’s no telling whether he will find it Harry: He has found it sir we’ll let you rest Mr Ollivander: He’s after you Mr. Potter if it’s true what you say and he has the elder wand I’m afraid you really don’t stand a chance Harry: Well I’ll suppose we have to kill him before he finds me Ron: Are you sure that’s hers Hermione: Positive (Hermione has used Polyjuice potion to change into Bellatrix) Hermione: Well how do I look? Ron: Hideous Harry: you can give that to Hermione to hold alright Griphook (Griphook puts the sword of Gryffindor into Hermione’s beaded bag – Harry, Ron and Hermione put their hands together – Griphook puts his hand on top) Harry: We’re relying on you Griphook. If you get us past the guards to enter the vault. The swords yours (Harry, Ron, Hermione and Griphook Disaparate to Diagon Alley – Bellatrix walks up the steps) Death Eater: Madam Lestrange Hermione: Good morning Griphook: Good Morning Good Morning? your Bellatrix Lestrange not some dewy-eyed school girl Ron: Hey easy Griphook: If she gives us away we might as well use the sword to slit our own throats understand Hermione: no he’s right I was being stupid Harry: ok. Let’s do it then (Harry Bends down so Griphook can go on his shoulder Ron puts the cloak of invisibility on top of them – they enter Gringotts) Hermione: ehe I wish to enter my Vault Goblin: Identification Hermione: I hardly think that will be necessary Goblin: Madam Lestrange Hermione: I don’t like to be kept waiting Griphook: They know they know she’s an imposter they’ve been warned (Gringotts guard is walking towards them) Ron: Harry what do we do Harry Goblin: Madam Lestrange would you mind presenting your wand Hermione: And why should I do that Bogrod: It’s the bank’s policy I’m sure you understand given the current client Hermione: no I most certainly do not understand Bogrod: I’m afraid I must insist. Very well Madam Lestrange If you will follow me (Harry, Ron, Hermione, Griphook and the Goblin go to the Lestrange Vault via a magic Cart – They see a waterfall) Harry: What is that Griphook Griphook? (They get splashed in the water and the magic cart kicked of their seat and they fall down about 20 metres screaming) Hermione: Alecto momentum! Harry: Well done Hermione Oh no you look like you again Griphook: The thief’s downfall washes away all enchantments can be deadly Ron: You don’t say just out of interest is there any other way out of here Griphook: No Bogrod: What the devil are all you doing down here. Thieves. you gave up the Ron: Imperio. (They hear a dragon scream) Ron: That doesn’t sound good They walk to the Lestrange’s Vault and come across a dragon) Ron: Bloody hell that’s the Ukrainian Ironbelly Griphook: here (Passes Ron a Clanker Griphook walks over to the dragon and starts shaking the Clankers with Ron) Griphook: it’s been trained to expect pain when it hears that noise Hermione: that’s Barbaric (They continue walking to The Lestrange’s Vault and Griphook puts Bogrod’s Hand on the door to op en the Vault – They enter the Vault which is Dark inside they see treasure everywhere – Harry puts a light on his wand) Harry: Lumos Harry, Ron and Hermione start looking around Ron: Blimey Hermione: accio Horcrux Ron: you’re seriously not trying that one again are you? Griphook: that kind of magic won’t work here Ron Weasley: Is it in here, Harry? Can you feel anything? (Harry looks up to where he can hear parseltongue – He sees Helga Huffelpuff’s cup – Hermione knocks something over and it multiplies) Harry: [Seeing Helga Huffelpuffs cup] that’s it, up there! (Ron knocks things over and it multiplies) Griphook: Flagrante and Geminio every think you touch will multiply Harry: Give me the sword Hermione Throws Harry the Sword) Harry is climbing up and everything is multiplying by twenty and he is getting covered in Treasure Hermione: (to Ron) stop moving (Harry continues climbing and is getting the Cup by means of the sword – Ron and Hermione look scared because there is no treasure multiplying – but Harry comes out of the Treasure with the sword and Helga Hu ffelpuff’s cup) Harry: Got it (The cup flies out of his hand and Griphook catches it and doesn’t give it Harry) Harry: We had a deal Griphook Griphook: the cup for the sword! Harry gives Griphook the sword and Griphook throws the cup to Hermione who catches it) Griphook: I said I’d get you in. I didn’t say anything about getting you out (Griphook uses Bogrod’s hand to get out of the vault – Harry, Ron and Hermione are struggling against the multiplying treasure) Griphook: Thieves Thieves Harry: Griphook GRIPHOOK Griphook: thieves Ron: that old git at least we’ve still got Bogrod Most unfortunate (The Gringotts guards starting throwing spells at Ron, Hermione and Harry) Hermione: We cant just stand here. Whos got an idea? Ron: Youre the brilliant one! Hermione: I’ve got something but it’s mad Reducto (Hermione runs and jumps on the Dragon) Hermione: Well come on then! (Harry and Ron jump on the dragon as well) Hermione: Relashio (The dragon starts climbing up the wall – the goblins at the entrance are working silently when the chandelier is shaking and suddenly the dragon comes out of the floor and crashes the place and breaks out of Gringotts) Ron: Now What Hermione: Reducto Harry: Hold on Ron: That was Brilliant. Absolutely Brilliant Harry: We’re dropping Ron: I say we jump Hermione: When Harry: NOW! (Harry, Ron and Hermione jump off the dragon into the water – Harry is struggling in the water – he is in Voldemort’s mind and sees that Voldemort finds out about the diary, the locket and the cup and he is getting really angry –He sees the Castle and he sees a Rowena Ravenclaw Harry gets out of the water with Hermione and Ron) Harry: He Knows. You-Know-Who he knows we broke into Gringotts he knows what we took and he knows were hunting horcrux’s Hermione: How is it you know? Harry: I saw it Hermione: you let him in harry you can’t do that Hermione I can’t always help it well maybe I can I don’t know Ron: Never mind. What happened? We cant do that! Weve got to plan! Weve got to figure it out Harry: Hermione! When have any of our plans ever actually worked? We plan, we get there, all hell breaks loose! Ron: He’s right. One problem snape’s headmaster now we can’t just walk through the front door Harry: Um well we’ll go to hogsmeade to honey dukes take the secret passage in the cellar. There’s something wrong with him it’s like in the past I’ve always been able to follow his thoughts and now everything just feels disconnected Ron: Maybe it’s the horcrux’s maybe he’s growing weaker maybe he’s dying Harry: No No it’s more like he’s wounded if anything he feels more dangerous (Voldemort is speaking to nagini in parseltongue and walking through the dead bodies of goblins and Gringotts guards Narcissa looks scared – Griphook is lying dead on the floor with the sword of Gryffindor in his hand which then disappears) (Harry, Ron and Hermione Apparate in Hogsmeade and they set of the Caterwauling charm – Death eaters come out searching for Harry, Ron and Hermione) Death Eater: Come on search everywhere Harry, Ron and Hermione are hiding in a pub and the death eaters are looking under the tables and the Caterwauling charm goes off again and the death eaters leave) Death Eater: POTTER (Harry, Ron and Hermione run out of the pub down a road to a dead end where there is a locked gate) Aberforth: In hear potter (Harry walks into the room where the man is standing besides the door)) Ron: Did you get a look at him for a second I thought it was Hermione: I know Dumbledore (H ermione sees a picture of a young lady and she also sees a mirror with Harry’s face on it) Hermione: Harry I can see you on this (Harry takes his piece of the mirror and sees Hermione Aberforth comes inside) Aberforth: bloody fools what were you thinking of coming here have you any idea how dangerous it is? Harry: He’s dead Aberforth: Sorry to hear it I liked that elf Harry: Who gave that to you the mirror? Aberforth: Mundungus Fletcher about a year ago Harry: Dung had no right selling that to you it belonged to Aberforth: Sirius Albus told me he also told me you’d likely be hacked off if you found out I had it but ask yourselves where would you be if I didn’t (Aberforth Puts food and drinks on the table which Hermione and Ron take) Hermione: Have you heard much from the order? Aberforth: The orders finished you know whose won anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves Harry: We need to get into Hogwarts tonight Dumbledore gave us a job to do Aberforth: Did he now nice job easy Harry: We’ve been hunting horcrux’s we think the last one’s inside the castle but we’ll need your help getting in Aberforth: This job my brother given you it’s a suicide mission do yourself a favour boy go home live a little longer Harry: Dumbledore trusted me to see this through. Aberforth: What makes you think you can trust him? What makes you think you can believe anything my brother told you? In all the time you knew him; did he ever mention my name? Did he ever mention hers? Harry: Why should he Aberforth: Keep secrets, you tell me? Harry: I trusted him. Aberforth: Thats a boys answer. A boy who goes chasing horcrux’s on the word of a man who wouldnt even tell you where to start. Youre lying not just to me that doesn’t matter to yourself as well that’s what a fool does you don’t strike to me as a fool harry potter so I’ll ask you again there must be a reason Harry: I’m not interested in what happened between you and your brother I don’t care if you’ve given up I trusted the man I knew we need to get into the castle tonight (Aberforth turns to the portrait) Aberforth: You know what to do (The lady in the portrait turns around and walks away) Harry: Where have you sent her? Aberforth: you’ll see soon enough Hermione: that’s your sister Ariana isn’t it. She died very young didn’t she? Aberforth: My brother sacrificed many things Mr Potter on his Journey to find power including Ariana when she was devoted to him he gave her everything the time. Hermione: Thankyou Mr Dumbledore Did save our lives twice kept an eye on us in that mirror that doesn’t seem like someone who’s given up she’s coming back Ron: Who’s that with her? Harry: Neville! You look Neville: like hell I recon. This is nothing Seamus is worse ey Ab we’ve got a couple more coming through Ron: Don’t remember this on the marauder’s map Neville: That’s because it never existed until now. The seven secret passages were sealed off before the start of the year this is the only way in or out now. The grounds are crawled with death eaters and dementors Hermione: How bad is it with Snape as headmaster? Neville: I hardly ever see him it’s the Carrows i have to watch out for Harry: The Carrows Neville: Yeah brother and sister in charge of discipline they like punishment the Carrows Hermione: They did that to you why Neville: Today’s dark arts lesson is about using the cruciatice curse on first years. I refused! Hogwarts has changed let’s have a bit of fun shall we (Neville opens the door and stands in front of Harry) Neville: Hey. Listen up you lot brought you a surprise Seamus: Not more of Aberforth’s cooking I hope you’d be surprised if we could digest it. Neville steps out and shows Harry Seamus: Blimey (Everyone In the Room of Requirement starts clapping) Some Students: Harry. Yeah! Neville: Get the word out to Remus and the others that Harry’s back (Everyone is hugging harry, Ron and Hermione) Neville: Ok k stop killing before you know who gets a chance Do you read new weather report lightning has struck I repeat lightning has struck Neville: What’s the plan harry Harry: ok there’s something we need to find. Theres something hidden here in the castle, and it may help us defeat you-know-who. Neville: Right. What is it? Harry: We don’t k now Dean: Where is it? Harry: We don’t know that either. I realise there’s not much to go on. Seamus: That’s nothing to go on. Harry: I think it has something to do with Ravenclaw. Um it’ll be something small easily concealed. Anyone have any ideas. Luna: Well there’s Rowena Ravenclaw’s lost diadem Ron: Oh, Bloody hell here we go. Luna: the lost diadem of Ravenclaw. Hasn’t anyone heard of it? It’s quite famous. Cho: Yes, but Luna it’s lost for centuries now. There isn’t a person alive today who’s seen it. Ron: Excuse me but can someone tell me what a bloody diadem is? Cho: It’s a sort of crown you know like a tiara. (Door Opens and Ginny Enters) Ginny: Harry Ron: Hey Harry: Hi there (Waiting for a response from Ginny, then addresses Hermione) Ron: six months she hasn’t seen me and it’s like I’m Frankie first year here I’m only her brother. Seamus: She doesn’t want you loser. She only wants harry. Ron: Shut up Seamus. Neville: What is it Ginny? Ginny: Snape Knows he knows that harry was posted in Hogsmeade. (Students are walking in lines to the great hall) Professor Snape: Many of you are surely wondering why I have summoned you at this hour. It has come to my attention that earlier this evening Harry Potter was sighted in Hogsmeade. (Students are whispering) Now should anyone student or staff attempt to aid Mr. Potter they will be punished in a manner consistent with the severity of their transgression. Furthermore any person found to have knowledge of these events who fails to come forward will be treated as equally guilty. Now then if anyone here has any knowledge of Mr. Potters movements this evening I invite them to step forward now. (Harry steps out – Students gasp) Harry: It seems despite your exhaustive defensive strategies you still have a bit of a security problem headmaster and I’m afraid it’s quite extensive. (Enter Arthur, Molly, Ron, Dean, Hermione, Neville, Kingsley, Remus, Fleur, Bill and Fred and George – Members of the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore’s Army) Harry: How Dare you stand where he stood. Some of you may even think that to fight is wise but this is foolish. Give me harry Potter. Do this and none shall be harmed. Give me harry potter and I shall leave Hogwarts untouched. Give me harry potter and you shall be rewarded. You have one hour. Pansy: What are you waiting for someone grab him (Ginny Stands In Front of Him – Then The Order of the Phoenix do and a few members of Dumbledore’s Arm) Mr Filch: Students out of Bed. Hermione and I have been thinking that it doesn’t matter if we find a horcrux. Harry: What do you mean? Hermione: Unless we can destroy it Ron: So we’re thinking Hermione: Well Ron was thinking. It was Ron’s idea it was completely brilliant. Ron: Well you destroyed tom riddle’s diary with a basilisk fang. Well me and Hermione think we know where we might find one. Harry: Ok ok but take this (The Marauder’s Map) – that way you’ll be able to find me when you get back. Hermione: Where are you going? Harry: Ravenclaw common room. Got to start somewhere. (Ron and Hermione Run down the stairs – Luna Runs up to Harry) Neville: Let me get this straight your actually giving us permission to do this Professor McGonagall: That is correct Longbottom Neville: To blow it up boom Professor McGonagall: BOOM Neville: Wicked but how on earth are we gonna do that. Professor McGonagall: Why don’t you confirm with Mr. Finnigan as I recall he has a particular proclivity for pyrotechnics. Seamus: I can bring it down Professor McGonagall: That’s the spirit now away you go Professor Flitwick: You do realise of course that we can’t keep out you know who indefinitely Professor McGonagall: That doesn’t mean we can’t delay him and his name is Voldemort filius we might as well use it he’s going to try to kill you either way. Don’t you reme mber what Cho said about Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem there’s not a person alive who’s seen it well its obvious isn’t it we have to talk to someone who’s dead (The fidelius charm is surrounding the castle) Luna: It’s very impressive isn’t it? Luna shows harry where he can find Helena Ravenclaw) Luna: If you’re to find her you’ll find her down there Harry: Aren’t you coming Luna: No I think it’s best if you two talk alone she’s very shy. (Harry walks down the Corridor to Where Helena Ravenclaw is) Harry: You’re the grey lady. The ghost of Ravenclaw tower Helena: I do not answer to that name Harry: No I’m sorry you’re Helena. You do know where he hid it don’t you Helena you just have to tell me. Please Helena: Strange you remind me a bit of him. In the castle. In the place where everything is hidden. If you have to ask you’ll never know if you know you need only ask. Harry: Thank you Kingsley: Tell Professor McGonagall that Remus and I will handle this side of the castle Dean: Yes Sir Kingsley: Hey Dean. On Second thoughts tell Professor McGonagall that we may need one or two more wands this side (Arthur, Nymphadora and Fred and George come) Remus: It is the quality of one’s conviction as the determined success not the number of followers Kingsley: Who said that? Remus: Me (Kingsley and Remus Smile) George: You ok Freddie? Fred: Yeah George: Me Too Ron: Open (in parseltongue) Harry talks in his sleep. Have you noticed? (Lily sits at the Gryffindor table) James: Hi I’m James Lily: Hi I’m Lily (James Pushes Lily and Severus out of the way and lily’s book fall to the ground which Severus picks up for her) Severus Snape: Just like your father Lazy and Arrogant Harry: don’t say a word against my father (The scene changes to Lily and James Dancing) The Scene Changes to Sybil Trelawney giving her second Prophecy – a flash of Voldemort returning to power) Professor Trelawney: Servant and Master shall be reunited once more (The scene changes to Snape talking with Dumbledore) Dumbledore: Severus Severus: Don’t kill me Dumbledore: The prophecy did not refer to a woman it spoke of a boy born at the end of July. Severus: Yes but he thinks it’s her son. He inten ds to hunt them down to kill them. Hide her. Hide them all I beg you. Dumbledore: What will you give me in exchange Severus? Severus: Anything The scene changes to lily with harry) Lily: Harry Harry you are so loved so loved. Harry mamma loves you, dada loves you. Harry be safe be strong. Voldemort: Avada Kedavra Severus: you said you were to keep her face Dumbledore: lily and James put their faith in the wrong person Severus rather like you. The boy Survives Severus: He doesn’t need protection the dark lord is gone Dumbledore: The dark lord will return and when he does the boy will be in terrible danger. He has her eyes If you truly loved her. Severus: No one can know Dumbledore: That I shall never reveal the best of you Severus Severus: Your word Dumbledore: you risk your life everyday to protect the boy Severus: He possesses no measurable talent. His arrogance rivals even that of his father and he seems to relish his fate. Harry: Don’t say a word against my father Severus: James Potter Lazy Arrogant Harry: My father was a great man Severus: Your father was a swine. Drink it it will contain the curse to your hand for the time being it will spread Albus. Dumbledore: How long? Severus: Maybe a year Dumbledore: Don’t ignore me Severus we both know that lord Voldemort has ordered the Malfoy boy to murder me but should he fail should presume the dark lord would turn to you you must be the one to kill me Severus it is the only way only then will the Dark lord trust you completely. Severus: Avada Kedavra Dumbledore: there will come a time when harry Potter must be told something but you must wait until Voldemort is at his most vulnerable Severus: Must be told what? Dumbledore: On the night Voldemort went to Godric’s Hollow to kill harry and lily potter cast herself between them the curse rebounded when that happened a part of Voldemort’s soul latched itself upon the only living thing it could find harry himself there’s a reason harry can speak to snakes there’s a reason he can look into lord Voldemort’s mind a part of Voldemort lives inside him Severus: So when the time comes the boy must die Dumbledore: Yes yes he must die Severus: You’ve kept him alive so he can die at the proper moment you’ve been raising him like a pig for slaughter Dumbledore: Don’t tell me know that you’ve grown to care for the boy Severus: Expect patronum Dumbledore: Lily after all this time Severus: Always so when the time comes the boy must die Dumbledore: Yes he must die and Voldemort himself must do it that is essential (Harry brings his head out of the Pensieve and sits down – he gets up and walks down the steps to Ron and Hermione) Hermione: Where have you been? Ron: We thought you’d gone down to the forest Harry: I’m going there now Ron: Are you mad no you can’t give yourself up to him Hermione: What is it Harry. What is it you know? Harry: There’s a reason I can hear them the horcrux’s I think I’ve known for a while and I think you have too (Hermione starts Crying) Hermione: I’ll go with you Harry: No kill the snake kill the snake and then it’s just him (Harry Walks down the steps to the forest Harry Takes the snitch out) Harry: I am ready to die (The snitch opens and reveals the resurrection stone – he grabs it in his hand his parents, Remus and Sirius appear to him) Lilly: You’ve been so brave sweetheart Harry: Why are you here all of you Lilly: We never left Harry: Does it hurt dying Sirius: Quicker than falling asleep James: You’re nearly their son Harry: I’m really sorry I never wanted any of you to die for me and Remus your son Remus: Others will tell him what his mother and father died for one day he’ll understand Harry: You’ll stay with me James: Until the end Harry: He won’t be able to see you Sirius: No were here you see (Points to Harry’s Heart) Harry: Stay close to me Lily: always (Harry Drops the Resurrection Stone) Death Eater: No sign of him my lord Voldemort: I thought he would come (Harry is walking towards Lord Voldemort) Hagrid: HARRY! NO WHAT ARE YER DOIN’ HERE Death Eater: quiet Voldemort: Harry Potter the boy who lived come to die (Nagini the snake comes) Voldemort: AVADA KEDAVRA Harry wakes up in an unknown place he stands up and hears something under a seat and looks under and steps back when he looks at it Dumbledore: You can’t help. Harry you wonderful boy. You brave brave man. Let us walk. Harry: Professor what is that? Dumbledore: Something beyond either of our help. A part of Voldemort was sent here to die Harry: And exactly where are we Dumbledore: I was going to ask you that. Where would you say were at? Harry: well it looks like kings cross station only cleaner and without all the trains Dumbledore: kings cross is that right this is as they say your party I suspect that you know realise that you and Voldemort have been connected by something other than fate so set by in Godric’s Hollow all those years ago Harry: So its true then sir a part of him lives within me doesn’t it Dumbledore: Did. It was just destroyed moments ago by none other than Voldemort himself you were the horcrux he never meant to make harry (Harry and Dumbledore sit) Harry: I have to go back haven’t I? Dumbledore: Oh that’s up to you Harry: I have a choice Dumbledore: Oh yes. Were in kings cross you say I think if you so desired you’d be able to board a train Harry: And where would it take me Dumbledore: On Harry: Voldemort has the elder wand Dumbledore: True Harry: and the snakes still alive Dumbledore: Yes Harry: And I’ve got nothing to kill it with Dumbledore: Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it. I’ve always prized myself the ability to turn a phrase words are that my not so humble opinion our most exhaustible source of magic capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it but I would in this case amend my original statement to this help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who deserve it do not pity the dead harry pity the living and above all those who live without love Harry: Professor my mother’s patronus was a doe wasn’t it the same as professor snape’s its curious don’t you think Dumbledore: Actually if I think about it t doesn’t seem curious at all I’ll be going now harry Harry: Professor is this all real or is this just happening inside my head Dumbledore: Off course it’s happening inside your head harry why should that mean it is not real Harry: Professor what should I do professor (Harry wakes up back in the forest) Bellatrix: My Lord My Lord are you hurt my lord Voldemort: I don’t need your help (Voldemort pushes Bellatrix on the ground) Bellatrix: Ahhh the boy is he dead (Narcissa goes up to harry and sees that he’s alive) Narcissa: Is he alive Draco is he alive? (Harry nods his head) Narcissa: Dead (Neville picks up the Sorting hat and wipes dust off it and looks up – he sees Voldemort, His Death Eaters and Hagrid Coming toward the Hogwarts Entrance – Everyone comes out of hogwarts) Ginny: Who is that? Hagrid’s carrying. Neville who is it? Voldemort: Harry Potter is dead Ginny: NO NOOO Voldemort: Silence stupid girl harry potter is dead from this day forth you put your faith in me HARRY POTTER IS DEAD (Death Eaters Laugh) Voldemort: and now is the time to declare yourself ome forward and join us or die Lucius: Draco. Draco. Narcissa: Draco come Draco Malfoy comes forward Voldemort: ah well done Draco well done (Neville limps forward) Voldemort: Well I must say I hoped for better (Death eaters laugh) Voldemort: And who might you be young man Neville: Neville Longbottom (Bellatrix Laughs) Voldemort: Well Neville I’m sure we can find a place for you in our rank Neville: I’d like to say somet hing Voldemort: Well Neville I’m sure we’ll all be fascinated to hear what you have to say Neville: It doesn’t matter that Harry’s gone Seamus: Stand down Neville Neville: People die every day Friends family yeah. We lost harry tonight but he’s still with us in here (Neville points to his heart) so is Fred and Remus and Tonks all of them they didn’t die in vain (turns to Voldemort) but you will (Voldemort laughs) because your wrong Harry’s heart did beat for us for all of us (pulls the sword of Gryffindor out of the sorting hat) it’s not over (Harry Jumps of Hagrid’s arms Voldemort looks angry) Harry: Cofringo (Hermione Laughs, George smirks and everyone looks shocked Harry Runs and Voldemort is trying to blast him with fire – People are screaming) Death Eaters: Come on come on come on Bellatrix: Fight! Fight! Lucius! Fight! (Death eaters are Disapparating – Kingsley Shakelbolt is creating defensive spells) Harry: Hold everyone into the castle. We have to kill the snake Hermione: You’re leaving Harry: Neville! Neville gets Blasted Backwards by Voldemort – Voldemort Disapparates The Malfoy’s are running away Harry’s walking through the castle with his wand out in case Voldemort comes Voldemort Apparates on the stairs were harry is just round the corner standing in front of the wall he comes out and he and Voldemort start duelling Harry brings the ceiling down onto Voldemort and is about to kill nagini but Voldemort blasts him away and harry falls and rolls on the steps Voldemort blasts a hole in the steps and harry falls down the hole and Voldemort Disapparates. Someone throws a rock at the snake, the snake is coming towards Hermione – so she throws a rock on the snake – Neville wakes up and sits up and sees that there is a battle going on around him he looks down and spots the Sword of Gryffindor on the ground – harry is running on a bridge inside the castle, Voldemort Apparates on the bridge and duel’s harry and makes the bridge to fall lopsided so that harry falls down – Harry gets up and material from Voldemort’s robes are holding Harry – the snake is cornering Hermione, Ron comes behind the snake with a basilisk fang in his hand but the snake bites the basilisk fang out of his hand. Ron is slowly walking backwards down the steps and Hermione is walking behind the snake – Ginny is duelling with Bellatrix – Bellatrix sends a killing curse at Ginny – Mrs Weasley starts duelling with Bellatrix – Bellatrix laughs) Mrs Weasley: NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH (Mrs Weasley and Bellatrix duel and Bellatrix is succeeding but then Mrs. Weasley is Duelling Dangerously and she hits bellatrix with a spell squarely in the chest and Bellatrix explodes with Mrs Weasley smiling) (Voldemort is hitting Harry in the Face and he falls to the ground he tries to stand up but Voldemort grabs him by the throat and pushes him on the ground he tries to get up) Harry: you were right Voldemort hits him again and harry fall to the ground Harry: when you told professor Snape that that wand was failing you it will always fail you Voldemort: I killed Snape (Harry is standing on the edge of the Tower) Harry: What if the wand never belonged to Snape what if it’s allegiance was always to someone else come on Tom let’s finish it the way we started it ogether (Harry grabs Voldemort and jumps of the tower – Harry and Voldemort are Screaming – they fall on the ground there wands are a metre in front of them and they crawl to get their wands they grab their wands and throw a spell at each other – the snake is chasing after Ron and Hermione – Harry and Voldemort are still duelling each other – Ron and Hermione are running Ron throws a spell at the snake but nothing happens Ron and Hermione fall down and the snake is about to kill them but Neville comes to the rescue and slices the snakes head of with the Sword of Gryffindor and the Snake explodes like Bellatrix – the spells that harry and Voldemort are duelling with stop a blue mist appears with Voldemort’s face on it where the snakes body had just been – Voldemort and Harry throw a spell at each other again – Harry saw the elder wand fly high, spinning through the air towards the master it would not kill, who had come to take full possession of it at last. And Harry with the unerring skill of the seeker caught the wand in his free hand as Voldemort stood on the spot quietly screaming and slowly exploding into a million pieces) (In the Great hall Neville is sitting on the floor and Luna comes and sits next to him and they look at one another and they both smile. Harry is walking through the great hall and sees Ginny leaning on her mother’s shoulder, he sees Cho who smiles at him, he sees Aberforth laughing with Dean and Seamus he sees the professor’s of Hogwarts) Professor Slughorn: If I’d forgotten the tools in my gown (Harry also meets Hagrid and He hugs him – Hagrid looks down at him and walks away) Hagrid: Harry Harry spots Mr Filch Sweeping the floor and sees Ron and Hermione and smiles at them they look down to their hands which are together and harry smirks at them – They walk out of the great hall to go outside Harry stands on one of the rocks and takes out the elder wand) Hermione: Why didnâ €™t it work for him the elder wand? Harry: It answered to somebody else. When he killed Snape he thought the wand would become his but the thing is the wand never belonged to Snape it was Draco that disarmed Dumbledore that night in the Astronomy Tower from that moment on the wand answered to him until the other night when I disarmed Draco at Malfoy Manor Ron: So that means Harry: It’s mine Ron: What should we do with it? Hermione: We Ron: Just saying that’s the elder wand. Most powerful wand in the world with that and you could be invincible (Harry attempting to snap the wand – Hermione looks at the Wand – Harry Snaps the Wand in two and throws it over Ron Steps forward as does Hermione and they look at where Harry Just threw the broken elder Wand – Harry looks at them and steps of the rock and walks forward a bit Hermione and Ron face him and Hermione goes up to him and hold his hand Ron goes up to Hermione and holds her hand) 19 YEARS LATER (Albus Severus Potter is walking with his brother James Sirius Potter and his Sister, who is sitting on James’ trunk, Lily Luna Potter to Platform Nine and Ten to reach Platform Nine and Three Quarters. Lily Hopes off James’ trunk and he goes through platform nine and ten barrier. Albus Potter is nervous to go through Platform nine and ten barriers – His dad puts a hand on his Shoulder) Harry: Together (Albus Nods and he and his dad go through Platform nine and ten Barrier then come on to Platform nine and three Quarters with Ginny Potter and Lily Potter right behind them they see Draco with his wife and son. Hermione is with Rose making sure she has everything) Hermione: Bag Rose: Yeah Hermione: Jumper She kisses rose on the head and hugs her Hermione: we’re going to miss you. Ron and rose’s younger brother Hugo is standing next to them Ron: Here they come (Hermione and Rose turn around and see Ginny, Harry, Lily, James and Albus. Albus bends down to tie his shoelace up) Albus: Dad what if I am put in Slytherin Harry: Albus Severus Potter you were named after two headmasters of Hogwarts one of them was a slytherin and he was the bravest man I’ve ever known Albus: But just say that I am Harry: then Slytherin house would have gained a wonderful young wizard but listen if it really means that much to you you can choose Gryffindor the sorting hat takes your choice into account Albus: Really Harry: Really Hogwarts Conductor: (Whistle Blows) All aboard Harry: Ready Albus: Ready Harry hugs his son goodbye (Albus hopes into a compartment with his brother James Rose, Albus and James wave goodbye to their parents as the train leaves – Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny all smile)

Nissim Ezikiel Essay Example

Nissim Ezikiel Essay Nissim Ezekiel as a poet of â€Å"City, Modernity Urbanity† through His contribution of â€Å"BOMBAY POEMS† Nissim Ezekiel :- A poet and writer of city or urbanity. How poet is called as a poet of urbanity. My essay proceeds to define the same. A poet is called the poet of urbanity if his poetry is the poetry of urbanity. The poetry of urbanity means the poetry of modernity and modernity in poetry means vigorous experiments of the breakdown of cultural continuity rather than cultural vigour. Modern poetry is the poetry of revolt against tradition, and as such there is much in it i. e. xperimental, ephemeral and puerile. So we can say that this dismissal of tradition also involved the rejection of conventional expectations. Modernism often stresses freedom of expression, experimentation, radicalism and even anthropological primitivism. It tends to be surrealistic, trying to seek to release the contents of the unconscious mind, often by combining unrelated images in a st range way. The subject of the modern poetry is the common man’s life, dilemmas, environment, surroundings, daily business of living, carnal irritations, anger and enjoyments etc. suffered by him. Individualism, its loss, is an important aspect of the modern poetry. The modern poetry present the realistically the doubts, the conflicts and the frustration of modern world. It is therefore pessimistic in tone. After independence, there were many changes, both political and social in the Indian society. Poetry written in a particular period does have influence of the time, Nissim was no exception, and his poetry also shows some influence of poetry of Modern poets like Eliot, Auden and Yeates. He did not have any classic background. Jews were driven out of their native land and were spread all over the world. Nissim Ezekiel was out and out an urban poet. Specially, a poet of the city, Bombay, his city Ezekiel was a modern poet by virtue of the time he was born in and in which he wrote his poetry. Many of his poems from different collections deal with the modern urban life. He wrote about the‘ every man’, individualism being one of the main features of the modern poetry. But the main aspect of his being a modern poet is his representation of certain urban ethos, the environment, thought, sentiments of the essential man behind the modern urban man. Some literary historians referred to the term â€Å"Modernism† as pretentious, but it braved itself and can be described as ‘a rejection of the traditional and conventional along with a search for ‘new means of expression’ . In literature modern poets experimented with language and form; dealt with new subject matter. Nissim Ezekiel is one of those poets of the post-independence era in whose writings we discover a genuine attempt to harmonize the diverse elements of our volatile urban culture. Ezekiel was born in Bombay and has spent most of his life in the highly westernized circles of the cosmopolitan city. He claims that he began writing in English because he did not know any other language well enough to express himself. â€Å"Contemporary poets in India generally write in English when they have gone through English medium schools†, wrote Ezekiel, â€Å"I write in English for this reason and cannot write in any Indian language†. One thing I would discuss here that Nissim Ezekiel is known as an Indian poet worldwide but what alienation and disassociation he had with his schoolmates and all, we can get to know by his some of his â€Å"Bombay† based poems . ere I consider the poem Background Casually: The poem is divides into three sections which approximate the childhood , adult and old age experiences . the three sections do not merly present a chronology of significant experiences but reflections over these experiences that draw out lessons on the status of the identity of the self. Ezekiel began with a sense of alienation with the world around him. His poetry has been attempted to establish some kind of recognizable order and relevance for his self in the irrational and featureless world that surrounded him. The poet’s gradual emotional disassociation from the immediate environment of the city where he was born began in early childhood. At school he considered himself a â€Å"Mugging Jew† among the Hindu, Christian and Muslim â€Å"wolves†, perpetually a â€Å"frightened child†. His failure to get into the mainstream of Bombay’s life is symbolically expressed in this poem. And here I read the first two stanzas. A poet-rascal-clown was born, The frighten child who would not eat Or sleep, a boy of meager bone, He never learnt to fly a kite His borrowed top refused to spin. (Background, Casually) Later Ezekiel was to write, â€Å"I am not a Hindu and my back ground makes me a natural outsider. Circumstances and decisions relate me to India. In other countries I am a foreigner. In India I am an Indian†. The original tension in Ezekiel’s poetry was probably born out of this agony of being a fortuitous Indian outside the pale of India’s dominant culture. Ezekiel’s life and poetry are, in fact, inseparable. The activity of poetry produces a solemn harmony of existence for him in a world riddled with discordant notes. Each poem is a luminous link in that chain of continuity that glorifies and ennobles the his life. Ezekiel is a poet of multitudinous themes. One of the most recurring themes in his poetry is the sensation of oppression (cruelty, Domination) in a crowded civilisation represented by the city of Bombay. It is the â€Å"bitter native city† where the hewas born and brought up and where he lives now. A recurring note in his poetry is the wound urban civilisation inflicts on unattached man. His poetry gives the impression of an oversensitive soul caught in the tentacles of a cruel city civilisation, unable to escape from its vagaries and consequently developing a love-hate relationship with its tormentor. Ezekiel has seen the splendour and poverty of the great city, its air-conditioned skyscrapers and claustrophobic slums, its marvelous capacity for survivals and its slow decadence. His reaction to the city’s oppression is a light-hearted, ironic and often sardonic exposure of its several hidden faces. â€Å"Many of his poems derive their effectiveness from the poet’s puzzled emotional reaction to the modern Indian dilemma, which he feels to be poignant conflicts of tradition and modernism, the city and the village: a somewhat obvious theme but treated by Ezekiel as an intensely personal exploration†. For Ezekiel this Indian dilemma is symbolised by the city of Bombay. More than any other Bombay poet, Nissim Ezekiel presents a comprehensive picture of the city, at once realistic and ironic. Background, Casually expresses the travails of an intelligent Jew boy of â€Å"meagre bone† living and growing up in a multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-linguistic urban society where he was so alienated and frightened that One noisy day I used a knife (Background, Casually) The â€Å"point† Ezekiel mentions in this early poem is â€Å"how to feel at home†. This has continued to dominate his poetry in several forms till today. In The Edinburgh Interlude (1983) Ezekiel wrote, I have become part of the scene which I can neither love nor hate. He lived through a â€Å"life of cheerful degradation normal in my neighbourhood† until a mature awareness ensconced him. Today towards the fag end of his career, as a condemner of the great city’s iniquitous ways, Ezekiel has come to realise I cannot save Bombay You cannot save it They don’t even want to save it (The Edinburgh Interlude) In spite of his disgust with the futilities of the sprawling city, Ezekiel, early in life, made a commitment to choose Bombay as his place of residence I have made my commitments now This is one: to stay where I am, As others choose to give themselves In some remote and backward place. My backward place is where I am. (Background, Casually) This inevitable choice to stay, however, unsettles the poet. Instead of providing an anchor for his thoughts and hopes, it launches the poet into an unending search for stability and repose. â€Å"However, Ezekiel has kept his commitment by depicting life faithfully as he finds it in the city of Bombay. He has not shown any craze for visiting foreign countries. Instead his poetry has acted as a mirror for reflecting life as it is actually lived in this backward place†. His desire to belong to the city he chose is often frustrated by the impact of the strange city’s truculent mass culture. His desire to escape from the tantaliser city of his birth is never realised because one cannot escape from oneself. The city has become his addiction. To save myself From what the city had made of me, I returned As intended, to the city I had known. (A Time to Change) Urban is a poem of eighteen lines exploring the divergence between the Bombay man’s search for the nourished dream of a free, oppressionless existence and his perennial inability to achieve even a partial realisation of it. He never sees the skies; he never welcomes the sun or the rain; his morning walks are dreams floating on a wave of sand. He knows the broken roads and moves In circles tracked within his head (Urban) The dichotomy between man’s hopes and achievements in the distressed city is suggested by the metaphor â€Å"broken roads† and â€Å"circles†. The disgusting routinisation of everyday life, the resulting Jack of coordination between action and perception and the sense of futility of human efforts to discover meaning in hope arc the outcome of the tyranny of the city over the citizen. The dilemma of the poet who desperately tries to disown and reject the city which â€Å"burns like a passion†is touchingly expressed in Urban. As a â€Å"good native† he is ready to reconcile with the â€Å"ways of the island†. However, the poem has ominous undertones of frustration and sadness expressed through contrasting images like â€Å"slums and skyscrapers†, â€Å"dragons claiming to be human†, â€Å"echoes and voice†, â€Å"past and future† and â€Å"calm and clamour†. In Citysong there is a reluctant acceptance of the ways of the city. From the terrace of a friend, the poet watches the city that lies below. A sudden urge overtakes him to return to the city just as a repentent debauchee returns to his seductress at her sight. I want to return As soon as I can To be of this city To feel its hot breath I have to belong (Citysong) A Morning Walk is a great poem which translates the sense of the bustle of the â€Å"barbaric city† into a gnawing pain that oppresses the poet’s memory. The picture of the city deprived of humaneness, seething with poverty, dirt, noise and bustle emerges with disturbing clarity in this poem. Barbaric city sick with slums, Deprived of seasons, blessed with rains, Its hawkers, beggar, iron-lunged, Processions led by frantic drums, A million purgatorial lanes, And child-like masses, many-tongued, Whose wages are in words and crumbs (A Morning Walk) The paralysis of the will and the finer emotions the Bombay man suffers from is succinctly suggested by a chain of metaphors. The â€Å"cold and dim† city is his purgatory. The morning breeze and trees, the cool garden on the hill and the hedges cut to look like birds are the symbols of Bombay man’s unattained and un attainable hopes. The poet poses the question why His native place he could not shun, The marsh where things are what they seem? (A Morning Walk) A Morning Walk is intended to be a walk out of the city’s fatal grip but ends up once again as a walk towards the city’s festering fascinations. â€Å"The marsh of reality and the distant (but troublesome to the city dweller) hills are the counterparts, in terms of landscapes, to the old dichotomies in Ezekiel’s work, between sex and the unrealised goal of an all-inclusive love, between body and soul, a sense of sin and the prospect of redemption, action and patience†. Adit Jussawalla says that â€Å"Nissim Ezekiel’s poems are the records of the moral aches and pains of a modern Indian in one of his own cities†. The poet who has gone through the travails of the city finds no alternate tabernacle of hope. This existential frustration is expressed in Enterprise. Like Morning Walk and Entertainment, this poem is molded out of the fallouts of frustration in a â€Å"barbaric city. † Enterprise is an allegory of the pilgrimage theme with a suggestion of futility. Journey from the city to the hinterland is a metaphor for contrived change from frustration to fulfilment. Even here a â€Å"shadow falls† on the group of pilgrims because: . †¦ †¦ differences arose on how to cross a desert patch (Enterprise) The group ignores the thunder which is nothing but the inner voice that should have guided the group. Man deprived of the inner voice or insensitive to the call of his own soul invariably rushes into impediments: Another phase was reached when we Were thrice attacked, and lost our way A section claimed its liberty To leave the . †¦ †¦ (Enterprise) At the end of the journey there is complete disillusionment. Was the journey worth undertaking? Instead of bringing any sense of fulfillment, the â€Å"trip had only darkened every face†. The futility of the trip, the struggles on the way, the deprivations the group undergoes and the failure to compromise the intention of the trip with its end are succinctly brought out in the final clinching line: Home is we have to gather grace. (Enterprise) He was able to see things in their primitive simplicity and innocence and could establish a personal identity with what is beautiful and sensuous in rural life. He refused to recognise sex and power as main motives behind human action; he did not try to depict the soul sickness of the urban civilisation, but â€Å"he travelled, so he found his roots†. . He discovers a new spirit of hope and declares his intention to walk the streets of Bombay â€Å"Cezanne slung around my neck†. Only the artist can create a new and orderly world out of the ruins of the old. His advice to the artist is, Do not be satisfied with the world that God created, create your own. (Advice to a Painter Satish Gujral) Ezekiel as a man was both urban and modern. His poetry is the poetry of urbanity. He was born and brought up in the metropolis of Bombay. He knew life there only. Urbanity is directly correlated to modernity. Ezekiel’s poetry has this urbanity as its base, on this axis it germinated and flourished . Ezekiel was accused of being ‘a poet of a local habitation and a name’, of only being restricted to the city of Bombay. He could neither think of India’s hoary past nor of the whole of India, which comprised mainly of rural areas. And it is true that he rarely wrote of situations outside Bombay. He depicted the city of Bombay, stripped of its glamour in a realistic manner. He was totally involved in a situation, which he felt to be a hopeless one too. It pervades his poems very fruitfully. (Gieve Patel in the introduction to Collected Poems) Ezekiel was so immersed in the life of his city Bombay, that he knew each and every aspect of life there. He did not have any inhibition in telling about both good and bad aspects of life in the island. It is felt that no other Indian English poet has given a more comprehensive picture of various facets of metropolitan life than Ezekiel. Gujral’s representation of City The anguish of the millions who lost their homes and families during the partition of the country comes out in the angry, sweeping gestural brushwork of his paintings. It was here that he cultivated his longtime desire to create accessible works that would portray powerful themes relevant to the masses. Gujral notes of his personal experience of Partition: My father and I were forced to stay and forced to be witnesses to this ghastly play which repeated each episode with an increasingly grisly ferocity as if aiming at the total annihilation of all sensual capacities in its audience. Depictions of large-scale violence can have the unintended effect of reinforcing the anonymity of the victims of such violence. By focusing on individuals in distress, artists try to reclaim the humanity of people caught up in conflict. Yet, the tension on the Faces shown in these works demonstrates the deforming effects of being forced outside the confines of security. Hiding of eyes representation may m eans , he experience of violence can be too harsh to face directly. Instead, artists may take some distance from real events, imagining idyllic alternatives. These alternatives may be couched in fantasy or humor, but they represent a struggle to Escape the immediacy of a trauma. Isolation focuses on individuals torn from the context of their normal lives. These works return to the starting point of trauma, the moment of Violence and destruction, Panic and pain, confusion and conflict are combined in these desperate images.

Frito-Lay It Strategy Essays

Frito-Lay It Strategy Essays Frito-Lay It Strategy Paper Frito-Lay It Strategy Paper Frito-Lay in the mid to late 1980’s was looking to change its way of doing business. As with many large companies, decisions were made on a corporate level, with field operations carrying out the business plan. This model, though efficient in terms of use of resources on the corporate level, did not allow for the kind of flexibility that the snack foods market demanded. The outgoing CEO, Willard Korn, had set forward a micromarketing strategy where each field office would be responsible for identifying demand, conducting promotions and other marketing activities and ordering replenishment. The problem with this approach was that Frito-Lay lacked the technological framework to make it happen in an efficient manner. (Frito-Lay, 1992) Overlap Between IT and Corporate Strategy Frito-Lay’s corporate strategy, set forward by the new CEO, Michael Jordan, was to initiate the micromarketing strategy begun by his predecessor, but do so in a way that will allow the company to retain overall control while allowing regional decision making to adapt to market changes. Essentially, Mr. Jordan was implementing the same strategy, but his approach was to garner much more success. The key to success would be to use technology to improve the flow of information to and from production, sales, marketing and the corporate level. The IT strategy would center on understanding the information needs of the business and designing and executing a technology solution that will help achieve corporate goals. Overlap Between IT and Functional Area Strategy The central problem Frito-Lay was experiencing was that information gathering and decision making was most efficient when closest to the consumer process, or â€Å"where the rubber meets the road†. : Given variations from region to region, different marketing efforts needed to be developed and no corporate marketing plan would allow for the most efficient use of resources across the entire company. To achieve this, IT strategy would center on developing an efficient and usable system to allow the free flow of information from consumer purchases up to regional sales offices. The primary tool that would be used in this effort would be the handheld computer (HHC). This tool would allow field representatives to gather restocking information, sell-through and other sales data when visiting each store that sells the product. This information could then be sent, in real-time, to the regional office for ordering replenishment and marketing analysis. (Frito-Lay, 1992) The functional area strategy is the plan for Frito-Lay to implement the new IT and corporate plans on the operational level. Obviously, any well-laid out corporate and IT strategy is useless if it isn’t implemented properly in the operation of the business. Strategic Plan Items Needing Review Obviously such a large change in operating procedure would require review of the plan by management of both the IT process and business processes. If a review is not conducted, then money and resources may be spent on projects that end up not working as intended, thereby wasting those resources. (Turban, 2010) The first thing that should be reviewed is the overall business strategy and whether the plan will achieve the objectives of moving operational and marketing decision making downstream, closer to the consumer. This includes the following items: 1)Will the sales force be able to use the information quickly? 2)Will replenishment be more efficient than under the current model? )How will marketing decisions be made and what influence will the corporate strategy have on them? Secondly, the IT strategy must be analyzed to determine if the technology solutions will meet the business need: 1)Can the HHCs be used by the current workforce without a significant investment in training? 2)Will the regional sales offices be able to make accurate and timely decisions based upon the information gathered? 3)Can the corporate offices aggre gate the information into usable analytics? 4)Is there any potential for cost or time overruns? What is the critical path? Justification of Key Components 1)Will the sales force be able to use the information quickly? – A central goal of the business strategy is to allow decentralized, micromarketing to be done in each of the 32 regions. Since the gathering of data is done in each vendor store, the lead time will be dependent upon operations. For example, if a given region has several large stores and dozens of smaller ones, is the replenishment done on a regular basis in all of them? If the larger stores order new inventory less often, it may result in a delay in pertinent sales data. )Will replenishment be more efficient than under the current model? – Obviously gathering restocking information â€Å"at the store shelf† is very efficient, but can that be translated into just-in-time inventory? Can the information be used to accurately forecast demand in the future? On a smaller, regional scale, activities by the consumer can affect demand. A good example of this may be a parade in a given town. If more people have taken to the streets to celebrate, they may purchase more snack food? How will this scenario affect stock and sales? 3)How will marketing decisions be made and what influence will the corporate strategy have on them? – Armed with more timely information about regional sales, the micromarketing strategy will allow regional managers to decide the best marketing mix to use in order to meet goals. What portion of the decision should be theirs? How will the local efforts align with national advertising campaigns? 4)Can the HHCs be used by the current workforce without a significant investment in training? Aside from the regional sales force, the biggest change in job functions under the new strategy will be the field representatives. Where before they used essentially pen and paper to order new inventory, now they will be confronted with an automated computer system in an age when computers were generally a luxury item for most people. What kind of training must be done? Will the new system have a negative effect on efficiency in the short run? What will the cost of that be? 5)Will regional sales offices be able to make accurate and timely decisions based upon the information gathered? On the back-end of the HHCs will be a new decisions support system, which will assist management in making decisions that are aligned with the corporate goals. Can the staff be trained in its use? Will managers previously accustomed to independent decision making will now be confronted with a computer telling them the best course of action, which will not always seem most evident. This can lead to implementation problems much like the HHC and the field staff. 6)Can the corporate offices aggregate the information into usable analytics? On a national level, the data gathered regionally will be used to decide the best impact for advertising dollars. How will the data differ from the old method, which had a much longer lead time? Can this improvement in timeliness be leveraged at the corporate level? A good example would be a news story about tainted corn supplies. Obviously this may lead to a drop in sales of corn-based products across the country. How will the company respond? Can they measure the drop effectively and decide the response in time? )Is there any potential for time or cost overruns? What is the critical path? – Lastly, Frito-Lay needs to look at the overall schedule and ensure the implementation is done in a way that will put all relevant departments on schedule. A clear understanding of the schedule of the project and its critical activities will ensure that the company gives priority to those that will result in delays. A delay on this scale could significantly hurt profits, since executive management needs to know completion in order to have an accurate business plan. Turban, 2010) Effective Communication Strategies Communicating an IT strategy to executives is a challenge because of the different background they often come from and the different way of looking at the business. While any business perso n can understand cost savings and extended costs over time, the unique nature of technology requires that each detail be explained in the context of the overall initiative, in this case, the transition from central decision making to regional offices supported by a strong information systems infrastructure. The best method for communicating the overall IT concept to executives is an in-person presentation with supporting analysis in the form of a chart or graph. This allows the executive team to look at the big picture in a format that will allow questions and feedback. It also summarizes the scenario without providing so much detail that the presentation will be mired in questions and discussion. A second approach is a cost analysis report with full detail. While not as personal or interactive as a presentation, the full report will give every detail of the project with upporting data. (Turban, 2010) Communication of a new initiative to senior management may take on a similar approach as executive communication, but with additional detail on implementation plans and less â€Å"big picture† numbers such as extended costs, IT hardware investment, etc. Senior management will want to know the schedule of the rollout and any required modifications to workflows from other departments in order to plan effectively for resources and budgets in their own areas. When one looks at the team level of communication, a different approach is needed. Since this level isn’t making large scale decisions, but instead carrying out an objective set forward by management, documentation is more effective. While all teams could be placed into a large meeting to go over the proposed changes, the best way of conveying the changes are in written form, either via email, internal memo or even posted to a company intranet. This allows each team member to read about the changes independently and understand what needs to be done. These team members can then work together to achieve the objectives. Evaluation of Effective Communication Strategies In the context of the Frito-Lay case study, communicating IT strategies becomes much more important. In the mid-1980’s, the average level of technological understanding was lower among everyone, including executives. Technology was just starting to be leveraged to realize internal cost savings through improved efficiency in the 1980’s. Because of this, it was far more unproven than it is today. The most effective approach would probably be to do both of the aforementioned methods in order to communicate the plan to management. A detailed report with complete numbers should be provided to the executive team days to weeks in advance of the presentation. This allows them time to review and formulate questions and concerns to bring up in the discussion following the presentation. Senior management would need a slightly altered presentation compared to executive management. This is because senior management will be concerned with budgeting, resource allocation and project planning for the new initiative instead of information required to make a decision. This also means that any reports presented before or after the in-person presentation should focus on smaller operational level numbers instead of larger market data. Team-level communication, in the form of a meeting followed by emails/memos is effective for this group because of the need for detailed information about the processes that will be changing, new workflows, changes in organization, new equipment, etc. This can then be followed up with additional training as required for each functional area. For example, only the team level would need to learn how to use the handheld computers, so only they would really need the documentation for the HHCs. Differences in Communication Needs Between IT Staff and Executive Staff As mentioned before, the executive team is unlikely to understand the details of the technology being deployed. A person with a traditional business background looks primarily at a small number of factors in making a decision. Questions they will ask include: What is the up-front investment cost? What are the extended costs over time? What is the payback period? These are all business indicators that involve the profitability of the company and the costs versus benefit. IT staff is much more likely to look at the scalability and utility of the technology as opposed to the business bottom line. While cost is still a concern, the IT professional is likely to have a longer view of the costs, in the scope of years as opposed to quarterly budgets. Further, the communication may take the form of a more detailed analysis of the standards of the hardware being purchased and whether those standards are expected to change in the future with contingency planning for a migration. For this purpose, a full report may be more useful than a presentation. (Turban, 2010) Strategic Framework that Aligns IT Strategy with Business Strategy The best approach Frito-Lay could use to align its IT and Business strategies would be Business Service Management. Under this methodology, each component of the project will have a key performance indicator (KPI) to determine its impact on the business as a whole. In addition to IT having a KPI, the business side of the company will also have a complimentary KPI. This approach is useful because in a project of this size, a constant measure of the impact and progress must be done to ensure the company is meeting its goals. By setting forward the plan ahead of time and determining what areas must achieve goals and to what extent, the project can be kept on track with an eye to the bottom line. In this case its even more important because of the large investment required of Frito-Lay. A poorly executed initiative could badly damage the profitability of the company. IT Assistance to Business Unit Strategy Development IT can help develop strategy in a number of ways: )A robust and widespread data mining and analytics system will allow business managers to understand where the maximum impact for their investment is being made, thereby allowing them to maximize those dollars. Moreover, the ability to trend out sales data in real time based upon real figures allows each business unit the ability to understand where they are going based upon where the y have been. 2)A well designed decision support system will allow different managers in different business units to make decisions that are complimentary to one another and align with the company goal. While the facts available to one area of the business may signal a given course of action, the decision should be made with an eye to the overall objective as well as what other business units are doing. The further use of an automated decision support system (ADS) will further assist management in ensuring that the BU strategy aligns with the overall company direction. 3)A final area where IT may help business strategy is in understanding the trends in the technology itself. This can include internal infrastructure and technology trends in general. For example, Frito-Lay may have looked to invest in a company network to link each regional office. This would have required a big investment. As of the late 1990’s, the internet as we know it wasn’t yet around for the general public. A few years later, it was established, and that investment would not be needed. ? References: Frito-Lay, (1992) Frito-Lay Inc, A Strategic Transition (Abridged) Turban, Efriam. (2010). Essay on The relationship between prints and painting on copper

Essay on The relationship between prints and painting on copper Essay on The relationship between prints and painting on copper Essay on The relationship between prints and painting on copperThe emergence of oil copper painting and copper printing contributed to consistent changes in the visual art. At the same time, copper painting and copper printing emerged as two different branches in the development of the visual art, although they had similar roots and used copper as the core of the technique used in painting and printing on copper. Therefore, the introduction of copper in the visual art contributed to the emergence of oil copper painting first and then stimulated the development of copper prints.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The introduction of copper in the visual art was an innovation that had had a considerable impact on the further development of the visual art. Artists had started to use copper in their paintings to make them more durable since existing materials used in paintings did not provide the long lasting effects. The traditional canvas used in painting soon resulted in the loss of color and irrevocable changes that led to the fast destruction of canvases and loss of paintings. In this regard, the use of copper contributed to consistent changes in the durability of paintings with the use of copper.   Moreover, they brought considerable changes in the brightness and shine of colors. As a result, paintings with the use of copper became more attractive for artists because they could make colors brighter and they were more shining, whereas paintings became more durable compared to conventional canvases.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   At the same time, the successful use of copper in painting contributed to further experiments in the use of copper in prints. In fact, the use of copper in prints was the natural consequence of using copper in painting because prints were even more suitable for using copper than painting. To put it more precisely, prints allowed wider production of art works based on the use of copper. They became more realistic , shining and attractive for consumers. As a result, artists used copper prints to make their works of art more attractive and realistic. In addition, copper prints became quite popular because they were easy to create and opened the way for the mass production. In such a way, the development of copper printing stimulated the further progress of printing and experiments involving copper and other materials.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   However, it is also worth mentioning the fact that the emergence of both copper painting and printing became possible due to the progress of copper production technology and adaptation of copper to use in   painting. For example, the use of copper in painting required the production of the copper powder. In addition, the copper plates used for copper prints required the high quality of copper production to minimize defects of copper that deteriorated the overall quality of copper prints making them impossible to use for the creation o f art works. In such a way, the development and improvement of the copper production technology and the evolution of painting opened the way for the emergence of copper painting.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Thus, experiments of artists in the field of visual art contributed to the appearance of new techniques of painting. In this regard, copper painting became one of the most important steps toward the further development of visual arts and appearance of durable painting, which used new shining and bright colors, while the appearance of copper painting stimulated the appearance of copper printing.

Galinsky's 6 stages of parenthood Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Galinsky's 6 stages of parenthood - Essay Example The parents will create an image of what comes ahead in terms of the birth of the child and parenting behaviours. The parents will have this image in their entire life because parenting will be a lifelong process. Growth then occurs when the parents modify an image that is consistent with the reality that is happening. Nurturing is the stage that occurs when the child is born to the time it starts speaking simple words. Parents do comparison of themselves and that of their child to find available discrepancies. Discrepancies present between the imaged child and the actual child is done by parents getting to know the child by touching and caring for it. At this stage, there is bonding and the parents become attached to the child. Parents face questions relating to their priorities; how much time they will devote to the child and how much time they will have for doing their other duties. Authority stage begins when the child is two years to when it is five years, and parents are faced with the task of deciding the kind of authority to be put in place, the rules to be followed and consequences of breaking the rules. Parents, having assured themselves of their identity, develop an attachment to the child, are faced with the task of accepting the authority they have over the child. This is the stage where they come to understand the child is not their extension; therefore, they form images of getting angry, having unconditional love, and having disciplinary actions that are different from those of their parents. There are parent/child relation problems, and the big question at this stage is how to solve problems that occur. Interpretive stage has its onset when the child begins preschool years to onset of teenage. With the entering of the child into kindergarten, the parents ask themselves whether they have been realistic and they evaluate the past in order to prepare for changes coming. The task

Ethical or Unethical Behaviour at Boeing Case Study

Ethical or Unethical Behaviour at Boeing - Case Study Example It has been observed that as a consequence from the cancellation of the order from Pentagon, the company had to bear an extra cost burden of more than $1 billion in its sales. Moreover, the firm was also banned from bidding in the federal contracts for around 20 months which in turn affected its shareholders, employees as well as investors by a large extent. Additionally, the company was also found to be frequently changing its CEO’s in quick succession which created confusions and cost burden as well as other leadership hazards within the internal business environment of the organisation. For instance, in 2002 the company was led by Philip Condit. After few years Condit was replaced by Harry Stonecipher, but he was also soon taken over by McNerny. Such frequent changes in the CEO’s of the company eventually affected its financial performances by a large extent. From the overall analysis, it could be concluded that the ethical or unethical practices of the company in th e presence ultimately affected the stakeholders of Boeing including the investors, the employees and the shareholders among others (Griffin 111-112). Q.2. Which Organizational Approach To Social Responsibility Did Boeing Appear To Use Under The Leadership Of Condit And Stonecipher? How Do You Think the Approach Changed Under McNerney’s Leadership? Under the leadership of Philip Condit, Boeing was observed to be highly inclined towards mergers, both in the horizontal and vertical directions within the airlines industry as a strategy to obtain competitive advantages. It has been observed in this regard that the merger led by Philip Condit was not successful which rather gave rise... Apart from that in another issue of stolen documents from the rival company and thus practicing unethical competition, Boeing had to face cancellation of the already placed order form Pentagon and a ban of 20 months from bidding in federal contracts (Griffin 111-112). Therefore, it can be observed that Boeing, under the leadership of Condit was mostly focused on competitive positioning of the company owing to which it can be stated that the company followed a compliance-based approach towards its CSR initiatives, which however, resulted in a failure. After the leadership of Philip Condit was replaced by Harry Stonecipher, the company also had to deal with many such issues. In the year 2005, Pentagon further cancelled some of its deals with the company because of ethical issues that depicted discrimination against female workers with Boeing. The female workers also claimed that they were underpaid and filed a suit against the company. The company suffered a loss of billions of dollars from the cancellation of the Pentagon deal apart from spending almost $73 million in order to settle the suit filed by its female workers. Furthermore, Stonecipher was also under the scanner for his affair with one of the female subordinates of the company which fuelled the allegation of sexual harassment against him. As a result of such issues, Stonecipher was forced to resign from his position as the CEO of Boeing. From the analysis of both the leadership styles of the CEO’s in Boeing, it can be affirmed that the organisational approach.

Cave present us with a coherent picture of Platos ideas Essay Example for Free

Cave present us with a coherent picture of Platos ideas Essay The purpose of the simile of the Sun is to show the difference between knowledge and opinion. In the world of opinion the sun gives light for us to gain empirical knowledge through sight. Objects (such as tables and mugs) and concepts (such as beauty and love) are part of the world of opinion because they are detected by our senses. The Form of beauty (or love) exists in the realm of the Forms. Plato believed that the Form of good gives philosophers knowledge of the Forms. The Form of Good gives the minds eye the power of knowledge and illuminates other Forms with truth and reality. In this way the Form of good allows us to see other forms and ultimately it allows us to see the form of good. The sun is also the source of all growth, and thus the Form of good is the source of all the Forms, and the cause of all existence. In the Sun, Platos idea is that visibility is opinion and the Form of good gives us the reality behind visibility knowledge of the Forms. The divided line goes into more depth on Platos previous idea. Although an abstract example, Plato uses it to try and make his idea simpler. Plato believed that there were four different states of the mind, and four different states of reality, both progressing from a lower level (illusion / images and shadows) to a higher level (intelligence / Forms). The lowest level is the second hand images of physical things. As Plato thought that physical things were just in the mind anyway, a shadow of a physical thing is the lowest form of knowledge, which corresponds to illusion in the mind. The next step up is physical things, which also covers sciences as they are based on the study of physical things. Belief is the empirical knowledge of physical thing, but is still opinion. The upper half of the divided line has mathematical reasoning, which is part of deductive reasoning. Deductive reasoning does not rely on empirical knowledge and so mathematical reasoning is not based on belief. The reasoning perceives mathematical ideas, which are based on some belief (such as seeing a square, you have a mathematical idea about the square), but these ideas do not rely on belief. The highest kind of knowledge in the mind is intelligence, which can only be reached by the philosopher. Mathematical reasoning leads to intelligence, but mathematical ideas (part of the intelligible world) lead to knowledge of the Forms. In the idea of the Divided Line, Plato is showing us in more detail the differences between knowledge and opinion. He suggests progressions from both illusion to pure thought, and from the less real (images and shadows) to the truly real (the Forms). He also makes two clear distinctions between the world of knowledge and opinion (in the mind), and the world of appearances and the intelligible world (in reality). Platos idea of the Forms and the distinctions between the mind and reality have been coherent between the Sun and the Divided Line both showing very similar ideas but in different attentions to detail. There is a slight incoherence though. In the simile of the Sun, Plato tells us that the Form of good gives us power to see all forms, yet in the Divided Line it is unclear if the Form of good gives any power at all, as it appears to be mathematical ideas which allow us to perceive the Forms. It may be though that these mathematical ideas simply give way to the Form of good so it can allow us to see the Forms. The Simile of the Cave moves into more specific detail on the accent of the mind from illusion to knowledge, shown by the prisoners accent from the cave to the outside world (intelligible world). The simile is also an example of the divided line, using ideas put forward such as shadows, physical things, illusion, the Forms (the Sun) etc. Like the Sun simile Plato depicts the Form of good as the greatest of all lights. There is a road between the fire and cave, maybe to portray a clear conversion from illusion to intelligence. There are people talking outside holding statues. Their voices and the images of the statues are projected into the cave, and the prisoners believe these are real. The people trapped in the cave are all looking at shadows of statues (images themselves) projected against the wall, and therefore are doubly ignorant. Plato allows a prisoner to be released, and he walks towards the fire where he is dazzled. It hurts him, and he is told that the people on the road are real and that the shadows are nonsense. He returns to the cave: choosing illusion. Plato is showing a would-be philosopher failing his journey of knowledge, due to a flawed character. Later on, the prisoner is taken into the sunlight and held until his eyes grow accustomed to the sunlight. Once accustomed he can see shadows and reflections within time. Plato here brings in the idea from the simile of the Sun, creating a coherent idea between the two similes, that the Form of good (the Sun) allows the philosopher to see other things until finally he can see the forms, and finally the Form of good itself (the Sun). Through duty the prisoner returns to the cave and is blinded by the darkness. This is an idea Plato has that the eyes can be blinded by the light and by the dark, as the mind can be confused by greater and lesser minds. This continues a coherent idea of Platos from the Sun simile, the idea of the Sun and the Mind, or if we were to bring the Divided Line into this, Reality and the Mind. So far Plato has created a seemingly coherent picture of knowledge and opinion. After descending from the Forms the prisoner tells the other prisoners the statues. He has seen the Form of justice and they have only seen the shadow of justice, and so they hold different views and therefore he is put on trial. Plato here is showing societys view of the philosopher ruler in a similar way as he does with the simile of the Ship. The different states of the Mind in the Divided Line are straight comparisons to features of the Cave. Illusion is the shadows cast by firelight; belief is the statues of things and the fire; mathematical reasoning is the shadows and reflections of real things of which the images are made; intelligence is the things themselves (moon and stars), and finally the Form of Good is the Sun. Plato uses a coherent idea throughout as appears to use similar / the same ideas in each of his similes (i.e., The Sun the Form of Good). There are problems in each of the similes and they all have points where they break down and lose a certain amount of coherence. In the simile of the Sun, although Plato would not have known at the time, the eyes are not charged up by the Sun, like he wanted us to think. Within the simile, therefore, the Form of Good no longer charges the mind with the power of seeing the Forms, but rather casts light onto other Forms. This is not what Plato wanted to portray. In the Sun, Plato explores the idea of the Sun being the ultimate Form in detail, but in the Cave, the sun itself is forgotten, and is seen more as a goal, or object, than as a metaphor for knowledge. Plato uses the fire and statues in more detail than the sun in the Cave simile, giving a better explanation of knowledge, which creates incoherence between the use of the sun in the Sun simile and its use in the Cave. In the simile of the Cave, mathematical ideas are not mentioned at all, not even in the accent to the Forms. This breaks down the idea of the Divided Line. A solution would be though that in the Divided Line, mathematical ideas are implied rather than stated: Plato may not even have mentioned the idea of mathematical ideas. This may be a reason why Plato did not mention them in the Cave. Plato says the prisoners only perceive shadows, which means the lowest level of knowledge illusion. This implies that Athenians cannot even see physical things, which is absurd because, unless all Athenians are blind, they will be able to visibly see objects such as tables, chairs, knifes etc. He also contradicts what he said earlier in the section on the Philosopher Ruler, that people in general only experience opinion / belief. This is only a problem if we use a strict interpretation, and in that case it would not be a simile at all, as similes should be open to wide interpretation. Another problem occurring in the Cave is that the shadows are used to describe illusion once, and mathematical reasoning another time. If we take the Divided Line, shadows should show illusion, and mathematical reasoning should be based upon physical things and a certain amount of belief. Plato has misused his metaphor of shadows in one of these similes and created an inconsistency. Although Plato has given us a clear picture of what his idea of knowledge and opinion is, and how the Form of Good fits into it, he has left many questions unanswered and a lot of gaps which need filling. His similes have been written and laid out in such a way that they can be interpreted in many varying, some contradictory fashions. This leads to the question of did Plato actually know himself where he was going with his arguments, or did he make them up as he went along? I personally think he thought them out well, but had to manipulate some things to fit in with his line of reasoning. This is perhaps a reason why these three similes are partly incoherent.
